The Electric City – a nickname the city of Scranton earned as the first city in the United States to have electric street cars – is as much a part of the University as any of our student residences, dining halls or athletic venues. Our campus, located two hours from Philadelphia, New York City, and Syracuse, N.Y., is adjacent to the city’s Courthouse Square, so we are right in the middle of the downtown.
You can walk downtown to shop, take in a show or visit a museum. Plus, it’s only a short drive to catch the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, the AAA affiliate of the New York Yankees, and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the AHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins. You can even see a great concert at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
While it’s an urban campus, we are just minutes from the hiking, biking and skiing locales that make the Pocono Mountains a popular vacation spot. The Lackawanna River Heritage trail is just blocks from campus with more than 70 miles of walking and biking paths.
For St. Ignatius, cities were the site where transformational education best took place, and it is here in Scranton that the University’s students learn and grow. We love finding new ways to engage students in the city, including Downtown Dinner and Movie Nite, the Scavenger Hunt and the Small Business Internship Initiative. Our students also perform more than 170,000 service hours each year – much of them within blocks of campus. Scranton is our home, our heritage and our future. We are excited to share it with you.
I'm a super outdoorsy person and Scranton offers so much. I love skiing at Montage Mountain. When I am not hiking or skiing, I am often kayaking on the nearby Delaware and Lackawanna Rivers.
